National Narcotics Officers Associations Coalition (NNOAC) Conference, “MEETING ON THE HILL"

I would like to thank Adam Keck, Executive Secretary and Steve Flores, Vice President Region 3 for representing the NMNOA during the annual National Narcotics Officers Associations Coalition (NNOAC) Conference held in Washington, DC on February 8, 2009.

In a joint effort with NNOAC, each member who attended the conference was to meet with their respective Congressman and Senator to discuss the needs for securing the JAG/BYRNE funds for New Mexico Law Enforcement. Adam Keck and Steve Flores did meet with representatives of New Mexico Senator Bingaman and Senator Udall, and representatives of New Mexico Congressman Heinrich, Congressman Teague, and Congressman Lujan.

Adam Keck and Steve Flores expressed to Senator and Congressman Representatives the JAG/BYRNE funds are used heavily by local police departments Statewide. That New Mexico is sparsely populated and the vast majority of communities in New Mexico are small towns that are economically strapped. The JAG/BYRNE funds help these departments combat their drug problems and without them, no proactive police work can be done because of economic woes.

Our JAG/BYRNE grant funding in New Mexico was cut by over 60% last fiscal year. This crippled the abilities of law enforcement at the local level to conduct proactive law enforcement. The cutting of these funds could not have come at a worse time in light of the current situation in Mexico as well as our Country’s economic situation.

On behalf of NMNOA, I would like to thank Secretary Adam Keck and Vice President Steve Flores for taking time from their busy work schedule and personal schedule to represent NMNOA and New Mexico at the NNOAC Conference.

Oscar Alvarado
NMNOA President
